Microsoft teams security: Without visibility there can never be responsibility
By Paul Graham
Customer Success Manager at Torsion
Today it has become normal to encourage people in our businesses to be Microsoft Team owners in Microsoft 365. However, when it comes to Microsoft Teams security it is hard for Team Owners to be fully accountable for their data if they are unable to know ‘who has access to what‘.
As many of you are aware in Microsoft Teams, as an Owner you only have a limited capacity to elevate or demote users, as well as add or remove people.
This problem of ‘who has access to what’ is not a new one; rather, it has been coming for several years as Microsoft 365 has become more and more user focused. Responsibility has been gradually moving from centralised IT to the users of Microsoft 365 themselves. This has resulted in a significant issue in how businesses go about demonstrating their Microsoft Teams security and compliance. Security and Compliance was once solely the responsibility of IT, but it is now much more nuanced and complex.
For the most part this transition has gone unnoticed by most of the people who use Microsoft 365, and sadly for many businesses they have either disregarded the issue or implemented harsh safeguards that have completely removed external sharing from their Teams.
Data oversharing and undersharing have now reached epidemic proportions. It is either a major security risk or a real barrier to collaboration and creativity. Now is the time for businesses that use Microsoft 365 to rethink their Microsoft Teams security and how they govern ‘who has access to what’. In the realm of Information Security/Cyber Security ‘who has access to what’ comes into the category of Data Access Governance.
For those who are unfamiliar, Data Access Governance is the process through which a business governs its data access. It is all about demonstrating security and compliance by utilising classifications to identify who has access to what information.
